A lot of hot air

Posted by Anne Marie Serrano on April 20, 2008

This morning I got up early to see the take off of the hot air balloons. The Canberra Balloon Festival is a big thing – it leads up to ANZAC Day (Memorial Day) on Friday. Years ago Brother Bob and Cydni took me to the Albuquerque Balloon Festival – now that was a sight to see. There were hundreds (at least it seemed like it – I don’t know how many really) of balloons all shapes, colors and sizes. It was incredible. We even went to the evening celebration called “Afterglow” (I think – my mind isn’t what it use to be) where the balloonist fill up their balloons, and the burners make the balloons glow. It was beautiful!

Well, Canberra’s festival isn’t much competition for Albuquerque’s but it does have a GIANT Kookaburra. I hung around for a while but it never took off, I guess conditions have to be perfect for his odd shape to fly. It was very cool nevertheless. One of the better aspects of the festival was that parking was free and plentiful, there weren’t a bunch of hawkers selling crummy junk and there was a Jazz band playing great music that was broadcast throughout the area at a volume that one could enjoy while taking in the surrounding events. Well, done.
